Daesung Group Recognized for Sustainability,

Wins Two Green Apple Awards

- Awards won for hybrid wind and solar-powered water supply and electricity system and Landfill Gas-to Energy system

[November 17, 2015] Daesung Group today announced it has won two 2015 International Green Apple Awards for the eco-friendly energy plants it operates. The awards are given by the Green Organisation, a UK based non-profit environmental group.

Daesung Group was awarded Asia Green Champion for SolaWin, a hybrid wind and solar-powered water supply and electricity infrastructure system. For its Landfill Gas-to-Energy (LFG) system located in Bangcheon-ri, Daegu, the company won the Gold Award. These awards were presented in a ceremony on November 16 at the Houses of Parliament in London.

The Green Apple Awards are internationally renowned environmental awards officially accredited by EU Commission and Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). The awards recognize the greenest companies, organizations, communities and individuals annually. There are more than 500 entrants for the awards each year.

Developed with Daesung Group’s proprietary technology and launched in 2003, SolaWin is a hybrid wind and solar energy system designed to offer an optimal energy solution for developing countries in many different areas of the world. SolaWin was also recognized as a FEW (Food, Energy and Water)-nexus solution, as it provides electricity, which can be used to pump water for agricultural purposes. This is especially important in countries which suffer from limited access to energy resources. SolaWin enhances the quality of life of those at the very bottom of the energy pyramid, and represents Daesung’s philosophy of putting the public good first.

Since its completion in 2006, the LFG energy project in Bangcheon-ri has been one of the most successful biomass enterprises in Korea. The landfill project, highly regarded in terms of both the public interest it serves and its profitability, processes waste into methane gas, which can later be used as boiler fuel for the nearby city of Daegu. The LFG project was registered as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) with the UN, the first for a municipality in Korea. The plant also gained more than 225,000 Carbon Emission Reduction (CER) units in 2008, a true testament to the facility’s contribution to the environment as well as its outstanding business value.

“It is pleasure that our know-how and commitment to pursuing the public interest has been recognized internationally. With sincerity and persistence, Daesung Group continues to play a leading role in the development of renewable energy” said Younghoon David Kim, Daesung Group chairman and CEO.

Kim serves as co-chair of the World Energy Council (WEC), the world’s largest independent network of global energy leaders. In 2016, he will become its chair.
