Since
its establishment in 1983 and as of the end of 2008, Daegu City
Gas has supplied nearly 914 million m3 of gas to roughly 720,000
customers including private homes, businesses and industry.
Daegu City Gas places great emphasis on the stable supply and
safe management of the gas supply through an integrated security
system consisting of informative systems such as the Remote
Control SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system,
the AVL system and Remote Electric Potential Surveillance System.
The company focuses on increasing gas sales with the expanded
use of NGV (Natural Gas Vehicles), co-generation and gas burners,
and by leveraging the current gas infrastructure. By also concentrating
on the development of environmentally-friendly businesses such
as LFG and CES systems, the company is helping save energy,
recycle resources and improve air quality as part of its green
management efforts.

In
2006, Daesung Group launched Welbay, an online shopping mall
that specializes in organic, pesticide-free or pesticide-reduced
agricultural products that have been so certified by government
or public organizations. The site¡¯s product range also includes
natural cosmetics, well-being appliances and environmentally-friendly
products. Welbay is planning to create well-being trips, weekend
farm trips, and farm trip package tours for educational purposes
that will help participants discover the importance of nature
through hands-on experiences.

Daegu
City Gas CES (Community Energy System) Division¡¯s cogeneration
plant is scheduled to provide electricity and heat from natural
gas to apartments and single family dwellings for 8000 families
as well as schools and commercial facilities. In a cogeneration
system small gas turbines powered by natural gas produce electricity
and the exhaust drives an absorptive chiller and heats water.
Then the heated water (waste heat) is harnessed collectively
to supply the demand for electricity as well as air conditioning
and heating. This method can increase the overall efficiency
of a system and meet an energy surge of over 70% of peak load.
It can also supply power automatically in case of an electricity
shortage or sell its surplus to KEPCO. In addition, CES eases
the burden of the construction of large power plants because
it is built to appropriate scale in regions where energy is
needed (such as in New Town developments) with a lower construction
cost as compared to existing plants. Finally, because it uses
natural gas -- clean fuel LNG -- it helps preserve the environment
by not polluting the air.
