In the past, Daegu¡¯s sanitary landfill in Bangcheon-ri
was a problem for people living nearby due to the sour-smelling
gases released by decay. However, since 2004, Taegu Energy and
Environment has been capturing and purifying that LFG, which
had caused odor and greenhouse gas, and transforming it into
a medium quality gas to be used as an energy source. Producing
50 million m©ø of gas every year, the landfill site provides
heating energy to nearly 100,000 households. With this contribution
to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in 2007 the company was
certified as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project by
the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and
is anticipated that it will earn over 5 billion won worth of
saleable certified emission reduction (CER) credits counted
towards targets under the Kyoto Protocol. Taegu Energy and Environment
plans to enter the LFG market overseas based on the know-how
and business expertise it has accumulated in the LFG busine.
